Concepts Covered
Energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be transported and transferred between objects. Energy can be moved from place to place by light. Light transmits energy through electromagnetic waves. Energy radiated from the Sun is transferred to Earth by light. When light from the Sun is absorbed, it causes Earth’s land, air, and water to heat up. Without energy from the Sun, the Earth would not be warm enough for living things to survive.
Photosynthesis occurs when plants absorb energy from sunlight through their leaves. During photosynthesis, light energy from the Sun is changed into stored chemical energy that a plant can use to grow. Heat transmits thermal energy from one place to another. Thermal energy is related to the motion of particles in a substance.
