Rational Numbers on a Number Line Math Games

3 games

In this series of games, your students will learn to understand p + q as the number located a distance |q| from p.  The Rational Numbers on a Number Line learning objective — based on CCSS and state standards — delivers improved student engagement and academic performance in your classroom, as demonstrated by research. This learning objective directly references 7.NS.A.1.b as written in the common core national math standards.

Concepts Covered

A fundamental fact about the addition of rational numbers is that p + (-p) = 0 for any rational number p. Use situations to describe why this is true (An elevator goes up three floors, then down three floors, etc.) Interpret negative number addition and subtraction expressions that describe real-world contexts.

Wizard vs Orcs Estimated Duration: 13 minutes Orcs are invading your castle and you are the only powerful Wizard in the Kingdom able to stop them!
Image for Linebacker
Linebacker Estimated Duration: 6 minutes Add rational numbers on a number line to kick, catch, and score goals on the football pitch!
Image for Number Line: Operations - Chips
Number Line: Operations - Chips Estimated Duration: 10 minutes Combine positive and negative chips and discover what combinations make a positive total, a negative total, and zero. Connect the chip representation to the number line, and describe an action as a jump on a number line.
Image for Number Line: Operations - Net Worth
Number Line: Operations - Net Worth Estimated Duration: 10 minutes Construct net worth by adding and removing assets and dets. Describe the conditions that lead to a positive net worth, and negative net worth, or zero net worth. Connect actions on net worth to jumps on the number line.
Image for Number Line: Operations - Operations
Number Line: Operations - Operations Estimated Duration: 10 minutes Build a scenario with an initial net worth, then operation on that by adding or subtracting positive and negative integers. Connect actions on net worth to jumps on the number line.
Image for Number Line: Operations - Generic
Number Line: Operations - Generic Estimated Duration: 10 minutes Generalize your thinking about operations with integers. Tell a story using jumps on a number line. Extend your thinking to equivalence classes of sums, and look for patterns with operations.
Image for Arithmetic of Rational Numbers on a Number Line
Arithmetic of Rational Numbers on a Number Line Estimated Duration: 4 minutes Understand p + q as the number located a distance |q| from p, in the positive or negative direction depending on whether q is positive or negative. Show that a number and its opposite have a sum of 0 (are additive inverses). Interpret sums of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts.
Image for Basketball Master
Basketball Master Estimated Duration: 12 minutes Shoot a basketball through the hoop and answer some questions along the way! The game does not have any instructional content, it simply has review questions spread throughout.
Image for Galaxy Escape
Galaxy Escape Estimated Duration: 20 minutes 10 Bright Monsters have been captured in space and they need your help to cross the galaxy jumping between platforms, finding them, and releasing them by correctly answering each question. Each monster that you release and unlock will be available to play with in the next level, in the search for the next monster. In your journey, you’ll be able to find power-ups, like ‘Double points’ and ‘Slow down’, which can be activated by finding gems, and their duration can be extended by correctly answering a question. Unlock and release the 10 different monsters and a spaceship along 10 different levels, while you make the most possible points.
