Properties Of Multiplication And Division Math Games

6 games

In this series of games, your students will learn to apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide. The Properties Of Multiplication And Division learning objective — based on CCSS and state standards — delivers improved student engagement and academic performance in your classroom, as demonstrated by research. This learning objective directly references 3.OA.B.5 as written in the common core national math standards.

Concepts Covered

Commutative property of multiplication is a x b = c then b x a = c. Associative property of multiplication is expressed as: a(bc) = (ab)c. Distributive Property is a x (b + c) = a x b + a x c. Commutative property of multiplication used to find unknown factors from known factors. Associative property of multiplication used to find unknown factors and products from known factors and products. Distributive Property can be used to decompose unknown facts into known facts.

Students can decompose a product that they do not know in terms of two products they know. Utilize properties to learn multiplication and division facts within 100.

Properties of Multiplication Estimated Duration: 4 minutes In this video, we will learn how to recognize and apply three properties of multiplication in order to learn how to multiply in an easier way. We will focus on the Commutative Property, the Associative Property, and the Distributive Property. Not only will we define each of these properties, but we will look at examples for how they can be used while solving Math problems.
Image for Area Model Introduction - Multiply
Area Model Introduction - Multiply Estimated Duration: 10 minutes Build rectangles up to 12x12 and relate multiplication to area. Looks for patterns in the total area calculation. Note: Students will automatically move through this simulation after 10 minutes of playtime.

Area Model Introduction - Partition Estimated Duration: 10 minutes Build rectangles up to 12x12 and relate multiplication to area. Partition a rectangle into two areas to see area as summative. View partial products and area calculation to discover the distributive property. Note: Students will automatically move through this simulation after 10 minutes of playtime.
Image for Newton Pool
Newton Pool Estimated Duration: 15 minutes The game consists of hand-crafted levels where the player controls a white ball. The goal of each level is to get the white ball to the end of the level in as few moves as possible, while racking up points by bumping golden balls into obstacles on the way! The game does not have any instructional math content, it simply has math review questions spread throughout.
Image for Galaxy Escape
Galaxy Escape Estimated Duration: 20 minutes 10 Bright Monsters have been captured in space and they need your help to cross the galaxy jumping between platforms, finding them, and releasing them by correctly answering each question. Each monster that you release and unlock will be available to play with in the next level, in the search for the next monster. In your journey, you’ll be able to find power-ups, like ‘Double points’ and ‘Slow down’, which can be activated by finding gems, and their duration can be extended by correctly answering a question. Unlock and release the 10 different monsters and a spaceship along 10 different levels, while you make the most possible points.
Image for Sea School
Sea School Estimated Duration: 12 minutes Sea school teaches the commutative, associative and the distributive property. The player is greeted by the ‘crab king’, a peculiar creature who guides the player through the levels. There are three levels in which the player solves tasks and gathers rewards. A journey awaits!
