New Features for the New Year

While the countdown to the New Year is over, the count of new features on the platform has begun!

Last year we made importing grades through Google easier, launched games in Spanish, allow you to use teacher-made assignments, strengthened game content and much, much more. This year we’re kicking things off with some more exciting updates.

Let’s shine a light on video!

Video can now be included in teacher-created assignments.

“If a picture paints a thousand words, a video is worth a million,” right? Sometimes a video clip is all you need to dynamically explain a topic. And now, through the redesigned assignment builder, you can do just that!

The newly created Assignment Builder now allows you to select a video in the [ + ] drop down.

From there, paste in your YouTube or Vimeo link and it will be added as an activity within your assignment!

Here are a couple items to note:

  • Only YouTube allows for a teacher to specify timed segments of a video to be shown. That means the full Vimeo video will be seen by the student before progressing on.
  • If Youtube or Vimeo is blocked by the student’s network, if the video has since been deleted, or if for any reason the video cannot load, the student will be notified and will be able to skip the activity. Teachers are also are notified in the Live Assignment view that the video would not load for the student and that the video activity was skipped.

Reference this help article in the future.

Browse the better way.

Selecting the right standard-aligned games has been made more straight-forward within the Browse experience! Once you navigate to the page, you’ll be able to quickly select which topic is the most relevant to you:

Keep drilling down from there and remember: you can always bookmark pages for future and even more convenient use!

Invite teachers easier.

This stays between you and us: we’ve seen you input teacher email addresses with typos… and then try again… and then try again. It’s okay, we get it: name spellings and email formats can be tricky! To make the process of inviting a friend as easy as the platform itself, simply find your colleague from the list provided and we’ll send the email.

**don’t forget! For every teacher who accepts your invitation and has students join their launched assignments, you’ll each earn a bonus 10,000 Her Points to use in our Rewards Program and Sweepstakes!

There’s more awesome to come this year, just you wait. Thanks for joining us on this journey, wishing all of you a healthy (and sane) rest of the school year!!

Awakening by Legends of Learning: 101

You’ve heard of Awakening. Or maybe you haven’t. Maybe you’ve seen your students play a 3D game and have no idea what it is. If you feel like you need an awakening on Awakening with Legends of Learning, this blog is for you, where it’s all broken down in question and answer format.

What is Awakening by Legends of Learning?

Awakening is an educational, immersive, 3D game that Legends’ own professional game studio creates. The same games from the Legends platform (that are made by game developers worldwide) are built into the Awakening game.

The first time a student signs into Awakening, they will create an avatar that represents their personal style!

Is Awakening educational?

The same minigames and assessment questions from the core Legends of Learning platform are built into the Awakening game. That means the same math and science games students play at school are available through a “sister” gaming platform to continue their learning.

Is Freeplay related to Awakening?

Yes. What we call “freeplay” is the time your students play Awakening when they’ve completed your assignments.

My students seem to be able to play Awakening when not in my class. How is that happening?

Awakening has a “Play On Your Own” option. That may be how they’re accessing the game during homeroom or when at home and not immediately jumping into it from your assignment.

What’s different about the Awakening game experience than the normal Legends of Learning assignment experience?

>> Educational progress

When playing a teacher assignment on Legends of Learning, students’ learning objective and grade level are set by the teacher. During post-assignment Freeplay, students will receive questions that correspond with both the grade level and the learning objective(s) of the teacher assignment they last completed.

If students come to Awakening through the Play On Your Own option, students will answer questions through their selected learning objective(s) based on their grade level.  Students start one grade level below and work their way through math and/or science standards…the more questions they answer correctly, the faster they progress through topics: students receive 1 point for a correct answer, and lose ½ point for an incorrect answer. Once students score a total of 10 points in a topic, they are marked as proficient and are determined to have “beat” that topic and will progress on to the next LO within the same grade level.

>> Math vs Science selection

From a teacher assignment, students cannot change their grade level or topic within Awakening.

When playing at home, a student can select which topic they engage with: Math or science, as well as select (and change) both their grade level and topic at any time.

>> Video game experience

Games within Legends of Learning tend to be 2D games (think old school Nintendo) with individual games following its own unique story or goal whereas Awakening is a 3D game that has a general goal of learning through question “battles” similar to Pokemon, and with a consistent storyline of the student as their “avatar character.”

>> Quiz format

Within Legends, questions are asked within the minigames and with the same theme of the minigame, itself.

Within Awakening, students explore the town and use their “Beastie squad” to engage in educational “combat” against opponent beasties (similar to Pokemon characters and their battles). Students are rewarded for answering content-related questions correctly and winning battles. The questions students encounter in the beastie battles relate to the topic of the assignment they just completed…talk about reinforcing learning!

Can I see my students’ performance in Awakening?
Yes, teachers can track student progress through independent Awakening play to see which standards they have mastered in both math and science. Parents can also create a Legends of Learning Parent Account to track their child’s progress in Awakening!

…that’s Awakening in a nutshell!

The Awakening experience, whether as assignment Freeplay or a student’s independent Play On Your Own time, is a great way to re-engage students in math and science content.

If you have further questions about Awakening, please reach out to the team at support@legendsoflearning.com

December New Features

Aside from all of the holiday cookies, pies and treats galore in our lives right now, Legends of Learning is sweetening the experience on the platform with these five recent updates. Let’s count them down for you! From improved assessments and student group experiences, to updates to one of our most popular games, we may have knocked some things off your holiday list early. (we hope so, anyway!)

5. Images in Assessments

For teacher-created assessments (or quizzes, if you will), images can now be added to them! Whether this is for math problems to show angles or to help students visualize fractions, or for science lessons to reference planets or other particles, this should help teachers and students get more in-depth on questions beyond a general text multiple choice item.

4. K-2 Science

For K-2 science topics, learning objectives have more instructional game coverage and have been broken into more categories to distinguish between all of the content.

3. More Student Groups Capabilities

Teachers can now sort their groups by name and date, to help delineate between same-named groups between multiple semesters or school years. In addition, student groups can now be assigned with different colors! So, gone are the days of pushing an assignment to the wrong group, whether you’re trying to better distinguish between different class periods, course level or language needs, for example.

2. Updated Teacher Referrals

Referring other teachers just got easier! You may not always have a teacher’s email address handy and you don’t want to take the time to send them a separate email. No worries, with the new referral experience, you’ll be able to find colleagues by name and click “Invite” and we’ll take care of sending an email invitation their way.

1. Basketball Master Updates

Everyone’s favorite game, Basketball Master, has been updated! You’ll love the new standards-aligned content questions added to the

game. Your students will love the awesome new visual improvements.

If you have any suggestions that would make your experience using Legends of Learning better, we’re just an email away: support@legendsoflearning.com.

Until next year, may your days be merry and bright and may the year ahead be a healthy and happy one for you and yours.

5 Must-Dos To Maintain Your Well-Being and Avoid Burnout

By Lisa Koplik, with Teacher Vision

The past year and a half have not been easy for anyone in any profession. It has been a particularly challenging time for teachers. The trajectory of a teacher’s life, up until March of 2020, was a predictable routine: show up for school in the fall, have breaks sprinkled in from Thanksgiving through summer, and then do it all again next year.

What March of 2020 brought was a complete lack of routine, change, inconsistency, and confusion—the complete opposite of a teacher’s favorite aspects of their profession! We chose to teach because we crave routine, structure, and feeling in control of our classrooms. That has changed with the pandemic.

As a result, it’s more important than ever to develop your well-being practice. To protect yourself from burnout—a reality for many teachers this year—make sure to engage in these five principles of teacher well-being:

1. Say no

2. Enact strong boundaries

3. Take mental health days off

4. Talk with close confidants

5. Know you’re not alone.

1. Say No

“No.” What a simple, short word. “No” is, in fact, a sentence all on its own, self-sufficient, one which doesn’t require any further explanations.

Teachers usually have people-pleasing personalities mainly due to their immense empathy and understanding for others. However, people-pleasing often pleases everyone but the pleaser.

Teachers notoriously take on way too much responsibility at school, and it is time we feel comfortable saying no. The pressure that comes with saying ‘yes’ to more than we can handle creates mental distress, anxiety, sleeplessness, and a lack of focus on the pieces of our work that truly matter: the students’ and our mental health.

2. Enact Strong Boundaries– and Keep Them

Take some time at the beginning of the school year to determine the boundaries you need.

Maybe you’re someone who does your best work at 10 PM once the kids have gone to sleep. Perhaps you like to check your emails between 5 and 6 AM with a cup of coffee. Perhaps you’re able to get all of your work done within your contract hours. Whatever it may be to do your best work, a schedule you can stick to is absolutely and completely acceptable.

Pro tip: Make sure to communicate your plan to those around you! There is zero shame in stating your working hours to the students and families you work with. You are allowed to have your own life outside of the confines of school hours, and when you enact firm boundaries, you’re more likely to keep them.

3. Take Mental Health Days Off

Burnout comes when the grind of your daily life becomes too much, and there is no time to pause and rest.

When teachers continue to push through because “it’s for the kids,” or it feels like the world will collapse if they are not there to help, it’s a massive disservice to everyone involved. Teachers cannot do their best work if they are mentally and physically drained. Students will not learn as much or as well if their teacher is burnt out!

Taking a day off here and there to protect your mental health is okay and encouraged. Being our best selves often comes with some rest and time to care of our own needs..

4. Talk with Close Confidants

Nobody quite understands a teacher’s life better than another teacher.

So, try to find at least one colleague, friend, or family member, who has some semblance of understanding of all the teaching nuances.

Having someone who understands what you’re going through creates an opportunity for discussion that might make no sense to someone outside of the teaching profession. In addition, it lends a shoulder to cry on and allows for productive conversations that may involve simply listening or valuable advice.

5. Know You’re Not Alone

The pandemic is affecting the third straight school year, and this is not easy for anyone. Pretending that everything is normal, fabulous, and super is unrealistic and unhelpful.

The first step toward feeling more in control and mentally secure is recognizing that we’re living under a traumatic stressor due to the pandemic and that our emotions matter. Everyone is going through a similar emotional flurry, even if they aren’t actively expressing it. Our students are passing through it too.

When you’re feeling out of routine, out of control, and burned out, chances are, numerous students and teachers you work with are feeling the same way. Talk about it. Recognize it. Validate it. Feel the vulnerability of taking a second to sigh, cry, or mourn the loss of what we had before. We are in this together, and you are not alone.

I hope my tips and advice help you maintain your well-being this school year. If you’re ready to develop your own practice to improve your teacher well-being, explore the self-care resources available on TeacherVision.com.

A New Assignment Experience Awaits Your Students

A new school year is all about new experiences, right? The same holds true for what students will see when tackling class assignments through Legends of Learning, whether they’re attending in-person, hybrid or virtual.

Let’s start off with the most exciting update for students first:

Students will automatically join your selected game and assignment and bypass the Avatar creation step until after they’ve completed the assignment. This will help keep your class focused while also allowing them to access the games even faster.

You’ll also see that this new linear view of games and assessments will allow students to better monitor their progress through assignments. Previously, this was shown by way of a “map” where the progress was presented more abstractly.

Additionally, there are a few other improvements that were worth calling out, as well:

  • All students will now be able to see how they performed on assessments–and get question-by-question reporting so they know what was correct or not

  • For sound settings and to log out, students will find everything from the “toggle” settings menu in the upper right-hand corner.

Wondering what makes for a great assignment?

  • Add at least three activities, always including at least one assessment
  • (Since the games each approach the material a slightly different way, multiple games gives the students different ways to think things through.)

Looking to gauge progress on a subject matter?

  • Add an assessment to the beginning and end of an assignment and compare scores
  • Or, relaunch an assignment before and at the end of a course to gauge progress of scores along the way

We hope that you and your students find this to be a smoother, easier way to start and continue with their assignments. We will soon be launching a new reward for students at the end of assignments – an amazing multiplayer learning experience – the next generation of Awakening, so stay tuned!

We are always striving to make engaging with the platform an increasingly legendary experience and updates like this are one step along that journey. As always, reach out to a Legends Team Member with any thoughts you may have on how we could improve the platform for you and your students: heroes@legendsoflearning.com
