Adapting Lesson Plans for Virtual Learning: Georgina Asfour and Amy Gerstein
Georgina Asfour
AKA "Hey Hey Ms. A"
This school year, teachers have become superstars at adapting their lessons for remote learning. However, there are still many challenges that persist, one of which is student engagement. With so many digital distractions, teachers have encountered difficulties in capturing and maintaining students’ focus. This challenge has led many educators to seek out learning resources that can supplement their curriculum.
Georgina Asfour, AKA Hey Hey Ms. A, knew exactly what resource to rely on to boost student motivation and provide additional support for her students – Legends of Learning: “Using Legends of Learning has helped me engage students with fun activities that I can assign to all students. I have also used Legends of Learning to assign activities to certain small groups that need extra support in certain topics.”
This year more than ever, students are struggling to get excited about learning new course material. To triumph over this obstacle, Hey Hey Ms. A uses Legends of Learning to provide an enriching and engaging learning experience for her students: “Legends of Learning has brought a joy factor into my classroom that has been hard to obtain with virtual learning [and] gives my students something to look forward to at the end of lessons to solidify their learning.”
Thank you Hey Hey Ms. A for finding ways to increase student motivation!
Amy Gerstein
AKA "SuperScience"
Creating lesson plans, especially during remote and hybrid learning, has become increasingly complicated. With students in various different learning environments, many educators have struggled to develop course material that can meet all of their students’ needs. Understanding the unique challenges brought on by distance learning, Amy, AKA Lady Ear-Theia, relies on Legends of Learning to help alleviate the stress of lesson planning: “Legends of Learning [lesson] plans can often be adjusted for remote teaching. I appreciate that they are both 5E and flexible enough to be adjusted for a virtual environment.”
Despite a change in where students are learning, Lady Ear-Theia still has high expectations for her students. One of those expectations includes having students critically think and analyze course topics to understand how those topics may apply to their own lives. Legends of Learning has empowered Lady Ear-Theia’s students “by giving [them] the opportunity to delve deeper into the topics introduced in class in-between synchronous sessions.” For example, her students were “particularly drawn to Journey to the Sea, which is a maze style game that teaches about the properties of matter.” After students played this game, Lady Ear-Theia’s students became engaged in meaningful discussion “about game design and environmental factors that [were] both unexpected and wonderfully aligned with [my] science/technology-based curriculum.”
Lady Ear-Theia, we are excited to see you equipping your students with the tools needed to practice their critical thinking skills.
