Concepts Covered

Recognize volume as an attribute of a solid figure.  A unit cube is a cube with a side length of 1 unit.

Build right rectangular prisms, count the cubes, and see that they are comprised of layers of cubes. Mentally decompose and recompose a right rectangular prism built from cubes into layers, each of which is composed of rows and columns.

Volume is comprised of layers of measurable units. Use standard units of measure such as cubic cm, cubic in, cubic ft, and any unit that the problem presents.

Image for Finding Volume with Unit Cubes
Finding Volume with Unit Cubes Estimated Duration: 5 minutes Students will learn to calculate the unit cubes in one layer of a rectangular prism by multiplying the rows by the number in each row. The number of cubes in each layer will then be multiplied by the number of layers to find the volume of the figure in units of measure including cu in, cu ft and cu meters. Cubic centimeters and milliliters and how they are related will also be explored.
