Changing Temperature Science Games

6 games

In this series of games, your students will learn about the effects on temperature when energy is added to or removed from a substance. The Changing Temperature learning objective — based on NGSS and state standards — delivers improved student engagement and academic performance in your classroom, as demonstrated by research.

Concepts Covered

Changing the amount of energy in a sample can cause a change in physical state and/or a change in temperature.

Adding energy causes an increase in kinetic energy of the particles in a substance, which leads to an increase in temperature. Decreasing energy leads to a decrease in the particles’ kinetic energy, causing a drop in temperature.

The amount the temperature changes depends how much energy is added or removed, how much matter is in the system, what type of matter it is, and its state of matter.

Different substances require different amounts of energy to change their temperature. The amount of energy it takes to raise the temperature of 1g of a substance by 1℃ is that substance’s specific heat. The more matter there is, the longer it takes to heat up or cool down.

Temperature is a measure the average kinetic energy of the particles vibrating in a substance. The units of temperature, measured with a thermometer, are:

  • Degrees Fahrenheit (℉)
  • Degrees Celsius (℃)
  • Kelvins (K)
