Concepts Covered

During photosynthesis, plants take in materials from their environment and convert them into food that the plants need to live and grow.

Sunlight is the main source of energy that drives this process. Plants convert it into energy for a chemical reaction, which turns water (absorbed in the roots) and carbon dioxide (absorbed from the air) into oxygen and sugar.

The plant gets its nutrients from this sugar, called glucose. It releases the oxygen into the air for humans and other animals to breathe.
