Write Simple Expressions Math Games

In this series of games, your students will learn to write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them. The Write Simple Expressions learning objective — based on CCSS and state standards — delivers improved student engagement and academic performance in your classroom, as demonstrated by research. This learning objective directly references 5.OA.A.2 as written in the common core national math standards.

Concepts Covered

Expressions are a series of numbers and symbols, such as +, -, x, and ÷, without an equal sign. Given scenarios, write expressions to accurately reflect their mathematical value with all four operations. These expressions can include grouping symbols (parenthesis, brackets, or braces). Written expressions do not have to be evaluated, but interpretation should be drawn from the expressions. Model with illustrations or pictures the value of expressions without necessarily evaluating them. Interpret words and phrases as operational cue words. The differing ways the calculations can be expressed also help to illustrate the commutative laws of multiplication and addition.
