Concepts Covered

Fractions must refer to the same whole to be compared. Unit fractions with larger denominators have a smaller value. When referring to the same whole, the larger the denominator the smaller the unit portions will be. When comparing fractions with different denominators, students can rewrite fractions as fractions with the same denominator by multiplying both fractions by the other’s denominator. When fractions have the same unit fraction, they can be compared using the denominators. Use reasoning to justify comparisons using benchmark numbers on a number line. Compare fractions using <, = , >. Order fractions with different denominators.
