Concepts Covered

Understand that algorithms for multiplication and division are abbreviations for reasoning about quantities. Compute products of one-digit numbers and multiples of 10, 100, and 1000. Solve one-digit multiplication by a power of 10 using place value reasoning. Compute products of one-digit numbers and two-, three-, and four-digit numbers with regrouping. Compute products of one-digit numbers and two-, three-, and four-digit numbers without regrouping. Decompose factors into base-ten units and apply the distributive property. Reduce multiplication computations to single-digit multiplications and products of numbers with multiples of 10, 100, and 1000.

Computing products of two two-digit numbers requires using the distributive property several times when the factors are decomposed into base-ten units. Use diagrams and arrays to develop an understanding of multiplication. Use area models where each part corresponds to one of the terms in the computation.
