Describing Functions Math Games

2 games

In this series of games, your students will learn to construct a function to describe qualitatively the functional relationship between two quantities by analyzing a graph. The Describing Functions learning objective — based on CCSS and state standards — delivers improved student engagement and academic performance in your classroom, as demonstrated by research. This learning objective directly references 8.F.B.5 as written in the common core national math standards.

Concepts Covered

Interpret real-world situations as functions in context. Describe the relationships qualitatively, paying attention to the general shape of the graph without concern for specific numerical values. Describe the relationships qualitatively to determine where the function is increasing or decreasing, linear or nonlinear, or both. Proceed from left to right and describe what happens to the output as the input value increases. From the graph alone, infer meaning from a function.

Image for Analyzing Graphs
Analyzing Graphs Estimated Duration: 4 minutes In this video, students will explore the correlation between graphs and real-world experiences. By analyzing various graph patterns, students will discern between increasing, decreasing, and constant functions, drawing parallels to the direction of movement on a roller coaster. They will also learn to interpret slope as a measure of speed. Through examples and comparisons, students will develop a deeper understanding of graph interpretation and its practical applications.
Image for Galaxy Escape
Galaxy Escape Estimated Duration: 20 minutes 10 Bright Monsters have been captured in space and they need your help to cross the galaxy jumping between platforms, finding them, and releasing them by correctly answering each question. Each monster that you release and unlock will be available to play with in the next level, in the search for the next monster. In your journey, you’ll be able to find power-ups, like ‘Double points’ and ‘Slow down’, which can be activated by finding gems, and their duration can be extended by correctly answering a question. Unlock and release the 10 different monsters and a spaceship along 10 different levels, while you make the most possible points.
