Dilations Using Coordinates Math Games

3 games

In this series of games, your students will learn the effect of dilations, translations, rotations, and reflections on two-dimensional figures using coordinates. The Dilations Using Coordinates learning objective — based on CCSS and state standards — delivers improved student engagement and academic performance in your classroom, as demonstrated by research. This learning objective directly references 8.G.A.3 as written in the common core national math standards.

Concepts Covered

Describe the relationship between the coordinates of the image and the pre-image under rigid motions. Dilations do not change angles. All lengths of line segments in the plane are scaled by the same factor when we apply a dilation. Dilations scale distances between points. Dilations of the same shape are similar. Dilations are transformations that expand or contract the plane of a given figure.

Describe the effects of dilating a figure using a scale factor. Describe the effects of rotating a figure using coordinates. Describe the effects of reflecting a figure over the x- or y-axis. Describe the effects of translating a figure n number of units using coordinates. In total, there are three games in this learning objective, including:

Image for Galaxy Escape
Galaxy Escape Estimated Duration: 20 minutes 10 Bright Monsters have been captured in space and they need your help to cross the galaxy jumping between platforms, finding them, and releasing them by correctly answering each question. Each monster that you release and unlock will be available to play with in the next level, in the search for the next monster. In your journey, you’ll be able to find power-ups, like ‘Double points’ and ‘Slow down’, which can be activated by finding gems, and their duration can be extended by correctly answering a question. Unlock and release the 10 different monsters and a spaceship along 10 different levels, while you make the most possible points.
Image for Rigid Motions on the Coordinate Plane
Rigid Motions on the Coordinate Plane Estimated Duration: 5 minutes In this lesson, students will learn how to describe the effects of rigid motions, such as reflections, translations, and rotations, on figures in the coordinate plane. They will explore how the coordinates of points change based on different transformations.
Image for INTERSCALAR
INTERSCALAR Estimated Duration: 29 minutes Space is the final frontier - and we'll need all our smarts to survive out there! Use the critical concepts of dilation and contraction to overcome the challenges of exploring the universe.
Image for Robot Chef
Robot Chef Estimated Duration: 18 minutes Congratulations, you are creating the first all-robot restaurant in the city! As you serve more customers, you will be able to build more robots to assist in delivering tasty treats. Attend Night School and answer questions to earn advanced robot chefs!
