Polygon Areas Math Games

In this series of games, your students will learn how to find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes. The Polygon Areas learning objective — based on CCSS and state standards — delivers improved student engagement and academic performance in your classroom, as demonstrated by research. This learning objective directly references 6.G.A.1 as written in the common core national math standards.

Concepts Covered

The area of a rectangle is base x height. The area of a square is side x side or side squared. The area of a parallelogram is base x height where height is perpendicular to the base. The area of a triangle is ½ base x height. A rectangle is the composition of 2 identical triangles. The height of a triangle is a side of a right angle, a height that lies over the base, or a height that is outside of the triangle. The height must be perpendicular to the base. Any side of a triangle can be the base and the choice of base determines the height.

Decompose shapes into triangles and rectangles and then add the areas to find the total area. Determine unknown sides by adding or subtracting portions of given sides. Determine the unknown height of triangles by adding or subtracting given sides. There can be multiple ways to deconstruct shapes into triangles or quadrilaterals in order to find total area. Area of the entire or portion of the shape can be used to solve a real-world problem. Real-world problems can have multiple steps to arrive at a final answer. Real-world problems often require mathematical reasoning and multiple operations.
