Write Expressions With Variables Math Games

7 games

In this series of games, your students will learn how to use variables to represent numbers and write expressions when solving a real-world or mathematical problem. The Write Expressions With Variables learning objective — based on CCSS and state standards — delivers improved student engagement and academic performance in your classroom, as demonstrated by research. This learning objective directly references 6.EE.B.6 as written in the common core national math standards.

Concepts Covered

Write algebraic expressions using variables to solve real-world mathematical problems. Expressions can represent problems and be used to solve problems. Determine whether a variable refers to a specific number or all numbers in a domain. The variable represents all the solutions that satisfy the equation.

Writing Expressions with Variables Estimated Duration: 4 minutes Learn how to use variables to write algebraic expressions and solve real-world problems, explaining the difference between variables representing specific numbers and any number in a domain
Image for Equality Explorer - Variables
Equality Explorer - Variables Estimated Duration: 10 minutes Discover how to maintain equality or inequality by adding and removing integers and variables from a balance. Build an equation or inequality and observe the effects of changing the value of the variable. Note: Students will automatically move through this simulation after 10 minutes of playtime.
Image for Equality Explorer - Operations
Equality Explorer - Operations Estimated Duration: 10 minutes Manipulate and solve equations by applying the inverse properties of addition and multiplication. Build an equation and observe the effects of changing the value of the variable. Note: Students will automatically move through this simulation after 10 minutes of playtime.

Equality Explorer: Basics - Lab Estimated Duration: 10 minutes Change the values of three different objects and build balanced and unbalanced situations. Note: Students will automatically move through this simulation after 10 minutes of playtime.
Image for Equality Explorer: Two Variables
Equality Explorer: Two Variables Estimated Duration: 10 minutes Build equations and inequalities in two variables. Observe the effects of changing the values of the variables. Note: Students will automatically move through this simulation after 10 minutes of playtime.
Image for Newton Pool
Newton Pool Estimated Duration: 15 minutes The game consists of hand-crafted levels where the player controls a white ball. The goal of each level is to get the white ball to the end of the level in as few moves as possible, while racking up points by bumping golden balls into obstacles on the way! The game does not have any instructional math content, it simply has math review questions spread throughout.
Image for Galaxy Escape
Galaxy Escape Estimated Duration: 20 minutes 10 Bright Monsters have been captured in space and they need your help to cross the galaxy jumping between platforms, finding them, and releasing them by correctly answering each question. Each monster that you release and unlock will be available to play with in the next level, in the search for the next monster. In your journey, you’ll be able to find power-ups, like ‘Double points’ and ‘Slow down’, which can be activated by finding gems, and their duration can be extended by correctly answering a question. Unlock and release the 10 different monsters and a spaceship along 10 different levels, while you make the most possible points.
