Concepts Covered
During a physical change, the physical properties of a substance change but the chemical properties are the same. Changes in state are physical changes. Matter can be divided into tiny particles that are too small to be seen. An increase or decrease in temperature causes tiny particles in matter to move differently, which causes a change of state. Changes in the size of a material are physical changes. The physical properties of a material remain the same even if the material is reduced in size.
During a chemical change, the chemical properties of a substance change, and a new substance is formed. When two or more different substances are combined, the types of substances and their temperatures affect whether a chemical change will occur. The formation of gas bubbles is evidence of a chemical change. A color change is evidence of a chemical change. The production of an odor is evidence of a chemical change. The formation of a solid in a solution is evidence of a chemical change.
When two or more substances combine and undergo a chemical change, the substances cannot be returned to their original states. The three common states of matter on Earth are solid, liquid, and gas. A mixture is a combination of two or more substances. A mixture can be separated back into its original substances. The physical properties of substances in mixtures may remain the same or change after being combined. Solutions are formed when one substance dissolves in another. A solution is a mixture of two or more substances that are evenly distributed. Matter can change from one state to another when a substance is heated or cooled.
