Eclipses and Seasons Science Games

5 games

In this series of games, your students will learn about the major phenomena caused by the sun, earth, and moon’s relative positions: solar eclipses, lunar eclipses, and the four seasons. The Eclipses and Seasons learning objective — based on NGSS and state standards — delivers improved student engagement and academic performance in your classroom, as demonstrated by research.

Concepts Covered

When the moon passes between the sun and the earth, it causes a solar eclipse. Depending on how the moon lines up with the sun, it can cause a total, partial, or annular eclipse. Solar eclipses don’t appear everywhere on Earth at the same time because each location sees the sun from a different angle.

On the other hand, when the earth comes between the sun and the moon, we experience a lunar eclipse—either total, partial, or penumbral. Every part of Earth facing the moon during a lunar eclipse can see it, because it is the earth’s shadow that causes the eclipse.

The earth’s orbit is shaped like an ellipse, so it gets nearer and farther from the sun throughout the year. But this isn’t what causes the seasons; the tilt of Earth’s axis is responsible for that. As we orbit the sun, the sun’s rays are stronger in the hemisphere tilted towards it, causing summer weather. In the opposite hemisphere, the weaker sun rays mean winter.

AstroDJ: Eclipses and Seasons Estimated Duration: 15 minutes Players take on the role of an Alien DJ tasked with using a cosmic DJ console to manipulate the Earth and Moon's orbits and Earth's axial tilt. The goal is to fulfill requests from Earthlings by setting up specific astronomical events or seasons.
Image for Seasons and Eclipses Adventure
Seasons and Eclipses Adventure Estimated Duration: 17 minutes Travel through a fantastic world and meet its people while completing mini-games and learning about the seasons and eclipses.
Image for Galaxy Escape
Galaxy Escape Estimated Duration: 20 minutes 10 Bright Monsters have been captured in space and they need your help to cross the galaxy jumping between platforms, finding them, and releasing them by correctly answering each question. Each monster that you release and unlock will be available to play with in the next level, in the search for the next monster. In your journey, you’ll be able to find power-ups, like ‘Double points’ and ‘Slow down’, which can be activated by finding gems, and their duration can be extended by correctly answering a question. Unlock and release the 10 different monsters and a spaceship along 10 different levels, while you make the most possible points.
Image for Eclipses and Seasons
Eclipses and Seasons Estimated Duration: 3 minutes The changing seasons and breathtaking eclipses are a result of the Earth’s tilt and its movements through space. Earth’s axis is tilted relative to its orbit around the Sun, causing different parts of the planet to receive varying amounts of sunlight throughout the year, creating seasons. Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, temporarily blocking sunlight, while lunar eclipses happen when the Earth casts a shadow on the Moon. Depending on the alignment of the Earth, Moon, and Sun, these eclipses can be total, partial, or penumbral, offering awe-inspiring natural phenomena visible from specific locations on Earth.
